virtual makeovers
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/7885330.jpg?147)
On the first day of class, use your digital camera or smart phone and take upclose pictures of each student in your class. Download the images to a shared drive. As part of your introduction to Multimedia, have the students save their image to their home directory. Access an online virtual makeover and create a new look. The students have a blast with this. You could also give them a picture of you and let them make you over, if you have the nerve! :-) There are a number of virtual makeover tools available online. Some require registration and some are blocked by the school. There are two that I was successful using:
Have the guys use http://hismakeover.com.
Have the girls use http://www.amway.com/shop/product/virtualmakeover.aspx
Male "Before" Image; Male "After" Image
Female "Before and After" Image
I also used these videos to help illustrate the power of Photoshop:

QR Code scavenger hunt
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/1901540.png?126)
This is a great activity to do either on the first day of school or when introducing a unit on digital cameras. The original idea came from http://ilearntechnology.com/?p=4211. There is a little bit of work on the front end, but if you don't have time to create the activity, you can just use mine (even though it has my school name). First, I created a simple Weebly web site containing a home page and 10 clue pages. I made sure that the pages were not linked so they could not be accessed from the home page. Then I went to http://qrcode.kaywa.com/ and create 10 QR images, each one linked to one of the clues pages. I then created the handout and that was it. Students do have to use their smart phones to complete this activity and they have to download a QR Code Reader to their phone. They use this reader to scan an image to find a clue. Once they figure out what the clue is they go take a picture of it. Once all 10 pictures have been taken, students will put together a photo gallery of the images. They can either use Photostory3, Movie Maker, PowerPoint, or even create an .html web page. it is really a fun activity and students like the freedom of using their smart phones. Just make sure you communicate to the faculty that students have permission to have their phones out!

Using Prezi is a great way to have the students step up their presentations. We took a State PowerProject and converted it to a Prezi presentation. The students really enjoyed this tool. They really did a great job.

humanclock.com
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/8708237.jpg?150)
Humanclock.com is a really cool site where anyone can submit a photo of a minute on the clock. The idea is that you keep the site open and use it as your "clock". The benefit is you get to see some really creative photographs from all around the world. I used this as part of a unit on digital cameras. I had the students watch the site for a bit so they could get a feel for the types of creative pictures that have been accepted to the site. Then I had them go out around the school and take a picture. They had to have the picture approved by me and, upon approval, upload the picture to the site. Within a few days each student received a confirmation email from the site. A few students chose a "minute" that happened during our class time and that made it really cool to watch for as we were having class.

99designs.com
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/2860239.png)
A logo and/or web layout creation site for professionals. Businesses post their need and professionals create and submit design ideas. If a business choose a submitted design, that designer gets paid. Use this site to help students with creative thinking and "live work" opportunities. Have students choose a "job" and create a design for the job. They don't really have to submit their work, but they could!
typography idea

Check out the web site: Five Words. Beautify typography posters are created and each has exactly 5 words on it. The idea is to use this site as inspiration for your students. Have them spend some time looking at not only the words, but also the font, styles, colors and layout that were used.
Then have the students choose their favorite 5-word phrase and create a typography poster! Then print them in color and display them around the room!

Top 100 People who changed america project using photostory3
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/4917452.jpg?142)
Photostory3 is a downloadable software. It can be downloaded to students' home directories or to a shared drive. Give each student a different person (I put all the names in a basket and had the students draw randomly). They must create a Photostory3 slideshow of 10 images, 10 facts, background music, and an opening slide. Photostory3 also has an option to add voice recording if you have external or built in microphones.
This is a great way to bring American History into your classroom!
Below is a link that will give you information on how to purchase the booklet I used to get the names. (it was published in 2006, but the information still worked!

send a message to yourself in the future

futureme.org
This is a fun opportunity to have students send themselves a message that they will receive at least 30 days in the future. Maybe have them email a one year goal or a five year goal. Maybe have them write a quick
reflection on their current lives or talk about some current events.
Registration is free, but an email can be sent without registering. Students can also add a picture to the email.

Silent Movie Project
I am not the originator of this activity, but it sure is fun to do! Students use PowerPoint to create the "words" that will appear between movie actions. I downloaded several movies from Thomas Edison's Silent Movie Library. Warning: these files can be rather large, so make sure you have a file type that is compatible with your system.
Zamzar is a superior file converter site. Its one limitation is that it will not allow you to convert videos from YouTube. The movies I used were: Buster's Revenge, The Artist's Dilemma, The Balloons, and The Unappreciated Joke.
Students could choose one of these film to use to create their silent movie! As an introduction, I show the students some real silent movies from the internet and we learned some trivia about movie history, Thomas Edison, sound, and more.

Web SiteCoffee Shop Commercial Project
I have an unedited version of a commercial that out Video Broadcast Class shot. The students must take to unedited version and create a 30 second commercial out of it. You may want to create a commercial first so you can teach the students about editing cuts, fade in and out, and other effects and features that make the commercial look "professional".
You will find the following files in my Dropbox folder; when you click on the link the Dropbox site will open and you will have the option of simply viewing the video or you can download it directly to your computer

Old MacDonald Music Video Project
As an introduction to using Movie Maker, this activity, given to me by Rebecca Streetman at South Gwinnett High School, gives the students practice on importing images, adding music and creating a video that must consider timing, animation, transition, and image quality. Grading these is a bit redundant :-) but it is a great introductory project.

music editing using audacity.com
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/3438953.jpg?143)
Audacity is a free music editing software that must be downloaded in order to be used. Students can download the software to their home directory or you can download it to a shared drive. In addition to the software, you must have a .dll file. I have included that .dll file here. The software will call for the .dll file the first time that a student exports a file. Students will only need the .dll file once.
The music editing activities were originally created by Randy Landry at Oconee County High School.
Another Idea: If you have access to microphones, you can have students record their voices and apply effects to that recording. They will have a lot of fun making their words slow down, speed up, fade in or out, and more.

Adding Album Covers to Windows Media Player Using Mp3tag
![Picture](/uploads/1/6/0/0/16007664/5259927.jpg?132)
Mp3tag is a free download that allows you to add album details to any downloaded song. If your students link to songs on a web page or edit music as part of a Multimedia activity, they can enhance the project by adding these details. When the hyperlink is clicked or the music is activiated, the Windows Media Player will contain an image of the album cover as well as the song title as the music is playing.
